• -- Make sure you have enough medication to cover your trip and an extra supply in case of a change in plans or delay.
  
  
• -- Keep your HIV meds in their original bottles to avoid unnecessary security hassles and possible confiscation of your medications.
  
  
• -- Pack your HIV medications in your carry-on luggage to avoid the risk of losing them with your checked luggage.
  
  
• -- Refrigeration is much less of a problem with HIV medications than it was in the past. However, if any of your medications have to be refrigerated, make sure the hotel or destination you are traveling to can accommodate that. If there is no refrigerator available where you are staying, you can buy a disposable cooler and keep your meds on ice.
  
  
• -- Ask your doctor for an extra prescription for your HIV medication. That way, if the medication is lost, you have a back-up prescription to fill. Also, bring your doctor's and pharmacist's phone numbers, in case you run into problems.
  
  
• -- Remember that, like everyone else, you'll need a U.S. federal or state-issued photo ID that contains the following to get through airport security: name, date of birth, gender, expiration date and a tamper-resistant feature. If you're traveling internationally, you'll need a passport and possibly a visa.
